Back-to-School Without the Budget Stress

Colorful school supplies on green background: scissors, calculator, notebooks, crayons, ruler, magnifier, paint set, and number tiles.

New backpacks, fresh sneakers, school supplies, sports fees. Back-to-school season adds up fast. And once the first bell rings, the spending isn’t over.

The good news? A little planning can make school-year expenses much easier to manage.

Think Beyond the Supply List

Back-to-school isn’t one shopping trip. It’s the start of months of expenses that may include:

  • Clothes and uniforms

  • Technology

  • School lunches

  • Sports and activity fees

  • Field trips

  • After-school programs

  • Transportation

  • Fundraisers

Before buying everything at once, separate your list into need now, need later and nice to have. Your child probably doesn’t need every new outfit, gadget or supply before the first day.

Give School Expenses a Monthly Spot

Once school begins, set aside a small amount each month for the expenses you know will pop up.

Even a modest school fund can make the next field trip, sports registration or last-minute project feel less like a surprise.

Make It a Family Money Lesson

Back-to-school is also a great time to get kids involved.

Let younger children help compare prices, choose between wants and needs, or set a savings goal for something they want later. Those everyday decisions can become simple lessons they’ll use long after the school year ends.

Parishioners FCU families can also explore My First Nest Egg, which makes learning about earning, saving and generosity fun through kid-friendly money lessons and a chore and allowance app. Members with an active Parishioners Youth Account can even earn a $5 deposit after completing 30 daily quiz questions in the app.

A smarter school year doesn’t require a perfect budget. It just takes a simple plan that leaves a little more room for everything ahead.
